LIVING CHARACTERS

Living Characters is a project to illustrate different Chinese characters and describe their cultural significance, highlighting the beauty and history behind the Chinese written language.

An ongoing project to illustrate different Chinese characters and describe their cultural significance, highlighting the beauty and history behind the Chinese written language. Done in collaboration with ExcelMandarin, a Mandarin school based in Seattle, as their Creative Director.

Each week, I research a Chinese character’s evolution over the ages, from 甲骨文 to 金文 to 繁体字 to 简体字. I illustrate the character, and we post the illustration alongside a description of its history and cultural significance on Instagram.

We brought the Living Characters to public exhibition at the 2020 Artists of Color Expo and Symposium (ACES) in Seattle Center, where 300 - 500 people viewed it over the course of a weekend.  Many of them were connecting with the Chinese language for the first time.
